  • Brazilian jiu-jitsu (also know as “BJJ”) is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system. The philosophy of jiu-jitsu is simple: close the distance, take the fight to the ground, establish a dominant position, and submit your opponent.

There are two things that make BJJ unique:

    1) Jiu-jitsu is built on the foundation of using leverage and body mechanics to make a smaller opponent effective against a larger opponent.
    2) Jiu-jitsu is focused around control, ensuring the fight ends without damage to yourself or your opponent.

These two foundational concepts make jiu-jitsu an incredible tool for not just sport and fitness, but as a powerful tool for self-defense.

  • Yes it is!

Any athletic endeavour is going to involve some level of injury risk. However, jiu-jitsu is one of the safest martial artist/combat sports there is and its name translates roughly to “the gentle art” for a reason. Because it’s a grappling art and doesn’t utilize any striking (punches, kicks, etc.) it has significantly lower rates of injury. (Source)

All of our classes are directly supervised by our staff to ensure all students are training in accordance with proper safety protocols. Students learn all techniques from a safety-first mindset, ensuring that everyone learns how to keep themselves and their training partners safe.

  • Absolutely not! Jiu-jitsu is for everyone regardless of their age, body type, gender identity, background, or experience level. Come try a class for yourself and we’ll prove it to you!

  • Absolutely. Jiu-jitsu is for everybody, and every-body.

  • All you have to do is show up, and we’ll handle the rest!

We’ll start by going over some basic safety protocol, get you fitted with a gi and belt, and introduce you to some of your classmates before we begin. Class usually starts with a warmup, then we teach you a couple of techniques, and end with some light sparring so you can try your newly acquired skills with a partner.

  • All you need is:

    - Athletic attire (shorts and a t-shirt, preferably a breathable athletic top)
    - A gi (if you have one)
    - Water bottle
    - A positive attitude!

  • In order to make sure our gym is the best training environment possible, we have certain expectations of all our attendees:

    1) Be respectful. Whether you’re on or off the mats, always lead with kindness. This is a positive, safe training environment, and we all have a responsibility to adhere to that standard.

    2) Come with clean training gear. Make sure your gi, belt, rash guard, and any other training attire you wear have been washed thoroughly before coming to class.

    3) Show up with a clean body and trimmed nails. For everyone’s safety and comfort, make sure you are clean and have trimmed your finger and toe nails before stepping on the mats.

    4) Footwear is required when off the mats. To keep our mats clean and sanitary, wear footwear any time you step off the mats. We recommend bringing a pair of sliders/sandals with you to class.

    5) Safety first, always. Always follow the instructions and protocols laid out by your instructors to keep everyone safe. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. When in doubt, ask. Keep yourself and your training partner safe so you can both come back to train again next class.

  • We teach a variety of techniques for both gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu to ensure your education is as well-rounded as can be.
